To Plant a Seed

Premiered at the Hamel Music Center (Madison, WI)

April 20, 2025

To Plant a Seed is a composition for frame drums, electronics, spoken word, and visual effects. This piece is in direct response to the genocide, ethnic cleansing, and displacement happening in Palestine as a result of colonization. With the escalation of the destruction to humanity, land, morality, and resources, we are all bearing witness to this violence. We, as witnesses, have an obligation to do our part by partaking in ethical consumption and boycotting complicit companies. Through text that explores deeply rooted lineage and violent colonial practices, To Plant a Seed challenges the audience to reflect.

Text such as "You, eating sunflower seeds by the handful" and "No more than a dozen seeds pass between my teeth... but I feel full," this piece challenges the audience to consider their footprint and acknowledge where/how much to invest their assets. Provocatively ending with the words, "Are your hands clean?", this piece is a call for supporting the Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) campaign and contemplate daily consumption habits.
